Since Equality FC has been launched, a principle like many I agree with and a stance I am proud my club has taken, we seem to have drifted away from a club striving to establish a ‘community club’ ethos and towards striving for political 'community plaudits' in the hope this media momentum will eventually bring in corporate sponsors ? Focus has shifted from the core aim of self sustainability to two guys on the Board enabled to dictate the direction of the club due to their own financial resources. It feels like we are now stuck in a politically correct vanity project and another questionable ‘game changer’ as ‘talks with interested parties continue’ re sponsorship as has been the custom for the last 2 years. We are now in my mind a hybrid community / privately owned club. I am not opposed at all to this change in emphasis as to me the experiment has failed and we need to move on. Yes we have done lots of community things, but there is constitution setting out our aims and we’re nearly 10 years in and still way off drifting further away. What do other people think ? Lots of exciting times at Lewes FC but maybe we simply, off the pitch at least, feel let down ? Has Equality FC been a mere cycnical marketing tool at the expense of building a community club organically ?

Just had a scroll through the equality fc twitter page. Not a single mention of the men, funny that! Would that be because the newly unelected “equality fc campaign manager” is interested in one team only?

Equality it is not! Everyone is equal but some are more equal than others.
The fans of both teams certainly aren’t considered as equal - admission prices being more for the men’s team for example.
The players aren’t considered as equals either, the women’s team are handed contracts willy nilly giving them security - whilst the men’s team aren’t as freely given out
The equality fc Twitter is about the women only. Again that is not equality, it’s just promoting the women’s team - trying to keep them in a league with the big names.

Hi Will - in terms of contracts, there was a stipulation last season on having a certain % of Women’s players on contracts as set by the FA not the club. That’s changed this year. However, the fact that there really is no local pool of competitive clubs in our area means we often have to offer contracts to bring players to the area - most also have agents and they see this as a prequisite. We also have a squad size cap imposed on us. On the Men’s side, there is no squad cap and so many players we bring to the club want a contract when they join - it is restrictive on their movement. On average over the last few seasons we used around 30 players. We tend to offer contracts to those under the age of 23 to protect our investment (time plus money) such as Ronnie, Hammo, Harry, Ross, Dylan. In terms of admission, the price to watch a Women’s game has continued to rise season on season at a higher rate than the Men’s so we get to a point, probably for 2020/21 where they will be the same.

To achieve equality you sometimes have to load it in favour of a disadvantaged group eg universities set higher quotas or targets for minority groups. Whatever your personal views, this is not a new thing. So at Lewes, the club have gone for equal pay even though the men's gates still generate more income, for example. True equality doesn't happen overnight.
If you think this is unfair, well OK. But maybe the decision all those years ago to prevent women playing on FA registered grounds was rather more unfair. This stopped the women's game dead in its tracks.
I do see that some directors are highly committed to the women's team and why not? I don't see any evidence at all that this is at the expense of the men's team.
I say all this as someone who principally follows the men's team, although I do come to occasional women's matches too.

If anyone on here seriously thought that two Directors – who had nailed their colours firmly to the mast of "equality" – would then heighten risk of being made to look foolish by not doing everything in their power to make it succeed, then they were a bit naive. That said, did I foresee – or indeed want – the Club become openly labelled as "a lever for social change" to the extent that it feels politicised? No I didn't.

Hi Stuart, Thank you for clarifying in regards to the contract stipulation. I hadn’t realised that was a stipulation by the league I still don’t think it’s right that the admission prices be different for the men’s and women’s teams, even if the gap is being closed!

Why is it not right to have a different charging tariff for the men's and women's games?

Why is it not right to have a different charging tariff for the men's and women's games? Because of the equality initiative. Surely fans for both the teams should get the same deal? That’s how I see it in my head anyway

Equality doesn't mean identical.

It's already been established that equality is a fluid concept – nice and malleable, to suit the circumstances and script... 👍

‘‘Twas always so. How often do you hear of racism claims where the victim is white? Or sexism claims where the victim is a man. Not never but rarely. It seems that the wrongs of the past have to be righted by punishing the groups perceived to have perpetrated those wrongs even though the present members of those groups do not share those values. Discuss.

Or is rarely recorded as racism or sexism. If I criticise the Women’s team I’m sexist. If a woman criticises the Men’s team it’s criticism.🤔
