if we are successful...and get promoted...will rooks fans be able to drink in the terraces.... if the success continued and we kept going up.... get real. this is a football club, not a drinking club. the sooner we get to the level that dictates 'no drinking' the better. i agree that our club policy should not be enforced by idiots from afar.....but untill this debacle is resolved, the argument that ..we do it and we dont care...is not sufficient. lets concentrate on the football. from the outside, ian is quite right. there are very few grounds in sussex that enjoy our rules.
ps. anyone who needs a spiel on the licensing rules concerning the rooks inn just pm me...ex director...who has had all this poo before.

Sorry, not convinced. I have not been going to Lewes games as long as you Billy but have seen most home games in the last 5 years or so and have never seen anything like the fuss that a few of the Wealdstone fans made today. It is not the clubs fault any more than pubs and clubs are responsible for the antisocial behaviour you will be able to see In Brighton this evening.

At the time, I didn't relate today's events to drink. Some of the comments on this thread imply there was a steady consumption of alcohol by those on the terraces. From where I sat, I saw no evidence of this. In the second half (when the incident occurred) the Wealdstone fans didn't move from the Ham Lane end.

I would agree with the above - there was few away fans in the bar at half time or in the second half so it is hard to see how blame could be put on the club for having the bar open.
If the club stop serving alcohol from 2.45pm in the ground fans will simply drink in the pubs and get in at 2.55pm just like you see in the Premier/Football League.
Those fans were not pissed........

The real question is whether the individuals concerned were served alcohol by the club when they were already the worse for wear.
No-one at the club can stop people having a skinful in pubs around the town, but the club are responsible if they are then served further drinks at the Pan when under the influence. I have in the past seen people being served when obviously drunk, one Newport fan hardly able to stand when ordering another.
It is down to the bar manager to ensure that sales to inebriates do not take place. The post from Wealdstone forum with the "6 pints" boast is clearly an example of someone who does not understand the capacity of the human body in relation to drink. It would concern me if the club were not mindful of their responsibilities in this.
I am not suggesting that this was a reason for the actions today. I do not know.

I would like to add that I sat next to a Wealdstone supporter and he was a real gentleman and charming with it. He was highly embarrassed by what he saw. I have just had a quick look at the Wealdstone fans forum with comments pre and post match. You can tell they are a different breed.

so once again a referee gets it wrong...surprise surprise. Billy it is stupid comments like that that is leading to more and more refs quitting the game. I am seriously considering it because of the grief I get. You make idiotic comments like that from far away without actually knowing whether the decision was correct, what the view the ref had etc etc. I suspect you got fined quite a bit when you were in the game and I suspect you deserved to lose every penny. Idiot

But I do think drink was a factor (Stuart). Some of them were very tanked up when they got to the Pan. So maybe these people would have been antisocial even if the Rook Inn was shut. But a pint or two whilst watching the game is part of the Lewes experience for me. Billy I will happily give this up when we get to League 2 but until then I resent the idea of having to give up this pleasure because of this idiot.

To all Lewes fans, please accept that it was a few idiots that spoiled the atmosphere today. You can blame the club, the fans, the drink or whatever personally I believe it was the culmination of a really indifferent start to the season that some of our support have found difficult to accept. Yes we have a problem but please know that it was nothing that was in any way connected to your great club and town. I expect that the recriminations will be dealt with in the following days/weeks but just posting this up to say massive apologies to all. Sometimes with our club you need to be a shrink to try to understand the mentality of some of our fans.

wealdstonefan: thanks, that's appreciated.
billytherook and ianwfc: we get one incident in the five years I've been going to watch the Rooks and we have to ban alcohol as a result? That's utterly mad.
Like pretty much every bloke I know who watches the Rooks, I also support another team further up the leagues. I watch the Rooks, when I'm not following my other team, in part because of the simple pleasure of standing on a terrace with a pint in my hand. I'm not going to hit anyone anytime soon, no matter how much I drink. If that simple pleasure gets taken away, I won't go nearly as often and the Rooks will lose my money. It's as simple as that.

Wealdstonefan: Good post, although we got relegated 2 out of 3 seasons, our club nearly went bust and we have been on many away days that have been good for drinking. In my time supporting the Rooks home and away, especially after the last 3 seasons we where never violent so why should a slightly bad start to the season prompt your fans to go so AS(BO) on us like that.

The last time I saw drunken away fans en masse was the Newport County game. I believe the police may have apprehended a few before the match and certainly apprehended loads afterwards. With drink available at the match, their is no need to get tanked up. Now that BHA have a ground one stop on the train from Lewes, which doesn't allow drinking at the ground for obvious reasons, there seems to be a tendency for away fans to congregate in Lewes and Lewes-based BHA fans (Boo traitors) to get tanked up hours before their match at the Amex. Although this may be good for the proprietors of Lewes pubs, I can't see that it does much for the image of football. The civilised Lewes fan will wander off to the Dripping Pan to arrive before the programmes have sold out and there is not much opportunity to drink more than a couple of pints if you have any intention of watching the game. I think all would have been well, even with drunken Stones supporters had it not been for the facts that they did not think our penalty was deserved and then they were aggrieved at the sending off. Had they just had a couple of pints, they would have shrugged it off. However, this match hardly hit 0.1 on the Richter scale when it comes to ground-breaking news so I think we should be glad that nobody was seriously injured and we should concentrate on the football. As it happens I thought Lewes were easily the better side. Our keeper and Nanetti were impressive today. I just want Nanetti to either release the ball (to one of our players) a little sooner - or if he has created an opening for himself, go for it and shoot for goal. Billy, you weren't there so don't try to spoil it for the 700 plus people who love to go and see a good game in brilliant sunshine (hotter than Spain) and quench their thirst with a couple of pints in plastic cups. From where I was watching, Ciardini was brought down. It wasn't a terrible tackle but it was worthy of a free kick and as it was in the penalty area what choice did the referee have? They had their chance to get back with a penalty but our goalie, having been clattered twice by their players and with a very unfriendly group of their fans behind him, saved. Three points well-earned but not the finest two hours in the Rook history.
