Pitts explained all this very clearly at the Q&A on Saturday. I don't see any problem with keeping one's cards close to one's chest. We've done it for years. He explained how players become available late in pre-season due to them not getting deals at clubs one or two leagues higher (who pay a lot more) and having to lower their expectations. Seems logical. He seemed happy with the way he is building his squad and I was quite impressed with his confidence and demeanour. I'm not saying we are going to be champions or even play-off contenders but I'm optimistic that we'll have a competitive team. We will see. The Proof of the Pudding and all that......

I still think it's a strange way of recruiting. We are basically waiting for players who will drop down to us as a last resort and will be meeting their team mates for the first time just before the season starts? I'm also still at a loss to understand how we can afford Sablier but couldn't keep a single player from last season's squad. As you say, I guess we just have to wait and see.

He’s not saying he’s waiting for cast off from other teams - I’m sure he’s got a squad in mind and if a player becomes available, he may have to lose one. In terms of last season’s squad, some will have had deals lined up before Craig joined. Others will have received offers that Lewes simply couldn’t match (a certain West Sussex club who signed two for instance, or the three who had offers from a Step 2 almost on their door step). Fans often forget that players at this level have jobs and that often dictates who and where they can play.

FT 2-0 Crawley. They had most of the ball and we had little chances, not surprising considering they are a number of levels above us. Regardless, I thought we put on an impressive defensive performance. Toby Bull did really well in the first half to make some crucial saves before being beaten on a rebound - which had some shouts of offside - right at the end of the half, much like against H'Heath. We seemed to play the majority of our starting 11 for 90 minutes with some substitutions being made at different points of the second half. Onwards to Saturday now at the Pan again where we host Worthing.

I would say that there were some promising moments and the goalkeeper looked very good indeed in the first half with some excellent saves.
When the midfield got a chance on the ball they looked composed and comfortable which was a positive
One thing I did notice was a lack of recognised striker playing - hopefully that will be sorted in the coming weeks.

I was also wondering what kind of system we were playing, with no single player leading from the front. The striker from the Haywards Heath friendly wasn't present today. We had players come off their wings as well as Eddie and Sab push further forward in midfield to press. It looked like a sort of 4-3-3 with a false nine.

I thought we'd signed Danny Bassett?

That wasn't a bad showing. We kept a good shape and defended really well against pro players plying their trade 4 leagues higher. Plenty of blocks and getting a foot in. Just the two goals, both coming from blocks fortunately falling just right for the attacker. The keeper looks useful too. He made some brilliant stops. We didn't have much up front. In fact I couldn't work out who was supposed to be playing up front. But overall I was very pleased with that.

I thought we'd signed Danny Bassett? We have but he was playing on the left wing rather than through the middle

We probably had the best striker in the division for two or three years under Russell

We probably had the best striker in the division for two or three years under Russell True, but we played the entire second half of last season without one. Madness.
