I know it's not a direct comparison due to the different league types, but the cost of a women's team in the US based professional league is indicative of the rapid rise. In 2020 the cost of entering the league for a new team was $2-$5 million. This year Boston paid $50 million for their franchise. It is a global phenomenon, and that is why Mercury 13 are looking for teams in various countries around the world.
FWIW, I've come to appreciate the FA system with its promotion/regulation as that allows for team/club advancement. But one advantage of the US franchise system is that they can (and have) established maximum salary caps to contain spending and even out the playing field. Nothing is perfect <grin>. And I'm NOT suggesting that the FA change.......
