An entertaining match in bright sunshine, marred for us home fans by a visitors' equaliser in the last minute of added time. Deserved, but galling. We'd led 2-0 at the break via well-taken goals from Moore and Lumbombo-Kalala, but our keeper had already made a couple of tremendous saves and we knew the game was far from over.
Some of us had worried that our squad had been assembled late in pre-season, but the good news is that today's team played with flair and cohesion for much of the time, and we clearly aren't going to be anyone's mugs. The third goal was clearly all-important, and once Hornchurch had got it midway through the second half - a neat move and calm finish - their tails were up.
That said, we seem to have weathered the storm, and the introduction of Gondoh and Tamplin occasionally had us on the front foot from time to time. Then up went the dreaded board announcing 5 minutes more and Hornchurch threw themselves at us all over again.
There was something all too familiar about the equaliser. We tried to play the ball into the corner but misplaced the pass. It was swept up the field, with Hornchurch having a throw-in level with our penalty area. In it went, a Lewes head sent it high in the air and it fell invitingly to a forward who hit a brilliant volley into the top corner. Gutting!
Young Penney was again named man of the match, and we sit in third with 10 points out of 12. On to Bognor on Monday . . .

Yes excellent game of football. Two teams wholehearted in their approach and evenly matched. Galling at the end but draw was a very fair result.

Entertaining game. Felt 2-2 a fair result over the 90 mins. Not sure about all that overtime though!

It’s always disappointing to lose a 2-0 lead, but thought that it was a good game in which we played very well at times with two well taken goals.
Was very impressed with Penney, Murthagh, Whelpdale and in particular Wood.

An enjoyable game, where we missed the torrential rain that hit other parts of Sussex!
A fair result, although disappointing to lose a two goal lead. I was pleased that we are prepared to play a long ball from the keeper when appropriate. A variation from last seasons 'let's play everything from the back'.
Some good players out there, I especially like our new goalkeeper but I think Wood needs a goal to gain a bit of confidence. His body language suggests that too.

At the start of the season I thought Horsham and Hornchurch would be top two, so it's a point gained imo. Knew it would go pear shaped after who ever does the Twitter feed said we were 'in control' at HT. Obviously a newcomer😀 Delighted with the start we've made as I too feared the worst after a challenging pre season and Taylor jumping ship. A point (or three) at Bognor will be the icing on the cake. See they had a good win yesterday.

All the gloom and despondency from the friendly results seems to have vanished. Funny that. Second in the table, still unbeaten You can't moan at that, can you?

Hornchurch scored on 4 mins 53 seconds. No complaints on that. I thought the referee on the whole had a good game

Totally agree - I personally would have taken a point before the game although after leading 2-0 it does feel like a loss. At leat we now have 50% of Hornchurch behind us! I personally feel we’re not quite Tony’s team yet and tactical awarness, fitness and both attacking and defending patterns of play are work in progress. I also feel man for man this is a better squad than last year. JT is a massive loss but TW is definitely quicker and more mobile and will score goals 🤞

That was one of the best games I have seen at the Pan, and there have been hundreds. Hornchurch thoroughly deserved their point, although the manner of it was frustrating - we won a free kick on the halfway line and decided to be negative, which backfired spectacularly. But what a finish! There are some really exciting players in our team, especially Nos. 1 and 19, but I am really waiting to see what Tony saw in Tommy Wood, who is all hustle and bustle but never leaves the ground and seems to have no understanding with the midfield. His one-on-one with the keeper at 2-1 only ever looked like having one outcome. But two excellent teams, some cracking goals and a great advert for the Isthmian Premier.
