Well that was disappointing...
Let's get the excuses out the way first - the pitch was dreadful. Extremely bobbly and mixed with windy conditions I'm sure it did nothing to benefit the quality of the game.
That said, I felt we were very poor. I know when someone mentioned on here previously that it felt like the white flag had been thrown in this was quickly dismissed, however, it's hard to disagree with that assessment. The lacking performances yesterday and over the last few weeks have almost felt as though the team are playing like it is a dead rubber. Coupled with Tony's comments about going separate ways at the end of the season it did make me wonder if there was any point.
We went behind just seven minutes in, again from a mistake of our own making. Nathan Harvey and Jake Elliot tried a rather strange goal kick routine where one of them touched the ball allowing the onrushing Tom Derry to vey nearly close Harvey down meaning he had to boot it straight out of play giving Folkestone the opportunity to attack and score. It all seemed too easy and I feared it would be along afternoon.
However, we were level five minutes later. A brilliant ball across the pitch from Whelpdale (who Tony had just had a go at moments earlier for losing possession) found Ola on the left who managed to get into the box and pull the ball across. It bobbled around and eventually found Gondoh who was able to steer it into the net.
Could we push on from this? No. The quality of the game was poor with numerous balls being kicked straight off the pitch or up to no one. Folkestone's second goal came after 26 minutes which had a bit of fortune about it. An effort from the right hand side initially looked as though it had been well saved/blocked, but a goalmouth scramble led to the ball eventually hitting Tom Derry on his head on the goalline with the ball nestling in the back of the net.
The second half was no better in terms of quality. We could have played for hours and not scored as the Folkestone defence easily had the measure of us by this point. The new striker very much looked like he had only just joined up with the side so I will reserve judgement for now and resist stating that nothing was offered that Tommy Wood wasn't already providing.
We knew the game was over when just 8 minutes into the second half a long ball put Tom Derry through on goal. Nathan rushed out but Derry did what he does best and stuck it in the back of the net.
All in all it was not great. I hope we can find some motivation for the remaining games of the season. I feel some clarity on Tony's plans for next season would be helpful.
