So is the quote from the website untrue or have we agreed to release him from his contract? ”Confirming the news, Club Chair Stuart Fuller said: “I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to agree a new two-year deal for Tony and Joe to stay at Lewes. Their approach and style of play has seen the club grow beyond belief and we look forward to the next two years and where this journey will take us.” A deal was agreed in principle back in May but subsequently wasn’t signed. Thanks Stuart

So the club is perfectly happy to leave fans assuming they can believe what they read, and not bother to provide accurate updates / corrections? And fans have to be alert for nuances in announcements, such as "agreed" not meaning the same thing as "signed"? How many fans would have picked up on that subtlety in a supposed good news story? Reminds me of the slippery language used on here in that thread about the kitman a while back. I thought the club was meant to be transparent, honest and forthright. Disappointing.

I have no idea if the club is perfectly happy as I no longer speak for the club. I’m only giving a view from my perspective. A deal was agreed in principle between the management team and the club in the summer and all parties were happy for it to be announced. There were certain terms in that agreement that weren’t or couldn’t be fulfilled and so it was never signed but all parties continued under the core implied terms. I don’t think at any point either the club or the management team considered a need to put a story out saying “actually there is no signed contract”. These things happen - people continue doing roles when an agreement isn’t finalised or can’t agree some terms. Players and managers are approached constantly - having a contract in football doesn’t mean a lot if someone wants to have a conversation. I have no formal or official role at the club but will always try to provide answers where I can, and not breaching any confidentiality on the occasions I look at the forum. I will leave it to the current board to decide if they want to interact with the topics on here. From experience, posting on here is not just trying to honest, forthright and transparent. It involved patience, diplomacy and insight.

Well, he went and saw them a couple of weeks ago when out game against Canvey was postponed as he was looking at one of their players. He goes to games most Tuesday and Wednesday’s as you’d expect a manager at our level to do so. People put 2+2 together and come up with a story. Sometimes they are right, more often they aren’t Exactly, if he wasn't looking at new players he'd be pilloried for that. Following that (il)logic, if Gareth Southgate looks at (say) Chelsea/Spurs, is he looking to go there? Um....no.

Whilst I appreciate you taking the time to reply as an individual, I don't buy that casual, almost-glib sounding attitude to the core point. If the club felt strongly enough to 'claim credit' for the managers signing new two year contract in a new story about that fact, it's wrong to subsequently claim that it's 'no big deal'. Why bother with any contracts at all if they 'don't mean much in football'? I feel they mean, at a minimum, some level of security of tenure, commitment, longevity, and the right to compensation if the people do decide to move on. I'm fairly sure credit has been claimed in the past when players have attracted a fee due to them being on contract, so it feels very odd to then have the importance of contracts down played to such an extent. And for unspecified contract specifics to be blamed for those contracts not getting signed (ie agreed), that raises the question of what couldn't or wouldn't be agreed and the importance / significance of those things. I don't expect further replies as your position seems clear, but I would expect a different attitude from a club that claims to be so very very fan-focussed.

I don’t think there’s many people who know me and talk to me when I see them would say I’m glib or casual. Perhaps my responses don’t lack the passion that others do, but that’s because I always try to be reasoned and fair.
I’ve tried to provide some context on the original thread based on some additional knowledge I have both from my former role at the club and my relationship with Tony and Joe. If that comes across in the wrong way on here then I can only apologise for the way it’s written. I will leave it to the new board and staff to provide updates in future.
