A good battle. Ascot are a decent team and had a good go at us. About 60 Rooks fans there

A good evenings entertainment although it was nerve shredding for the last 30 minutes when Ascot threw everything at us after they had pulled one back with an o.g. It wasn't that easy to see from the other end but we think they missed two absolute sitters. One of them was an open goal that, incredibly, was put wide with our keeper nowhere. An early entry for the miss of the season. Anyway, two good goals by Whelpdale and we're in the hat on Monday. Well done lads.

Looked comfortable at 2-0 but a wild sliced og by Hughes opened the door and felt we lost the midfield battle after that, when we needed to shut down the game. It was played at 100mph and they were more than decent, so just pleased to see us into the hat. Nice set up at Ascot and they worked like demons to get the (excellent) burgers out. But please, never go down the 4g route at Lewes. Those pitches just speed the game up and it doesn't make for a great spectacle. Thought Murtagh did well but faded late in the game. Tamplin sometimes need to take a deep breath...there's a fine line between energetic and reckless. Whelpdale looked to have picked up an injury.

We also hit the post in the last minute. Last 30 was certainly a bit less comfortable than the first 60. We’d watched them (twice) so we knew what to expect in terms of energy and pressing and set up accordingly. Their long throw tactic doesn’t really work when the player you want to be on the end of them is the one taking the throws!

From the other end one often thinks something is really close when in reality it isn't. Ascot's ground is very nice (with excellent Stodge) but I thought the floodlights weren't that good. I completely lost the ball several times, including for their goal, and so did the other Stodgebusters. Although this could, of course, just be down to our aged eyesight.

You'd expect that away from home in the Cup, with a bigger than usual crowd. Yes, we rode our luck a little but equally could have scored a third to kill it off when Wood got the ball stuck beneath his feet when trying to flick in a cross. That's a side that won the FA Vase last season. Overall, I thought we were good value for the win and generally matched their athleticism and energy. We do have a geriatric midfield, which is a problem in the late stages of games. I like Murtagh but his physique resembles a man wandering out of a night club at 3am. But when I think back to Three Bridges last season that was chalk and cheese. Bring on the draw.

Just had a look at the Fa cup fixture dates and can’t help but think we have been a bit unlucky with scheduling this season.
For instance on Saturday we would have been due to play Hastings, this will now be midweek which will no doubt knock a few hundred off what would have been a decent crowd. The next round will be played on the 30th when we were due to play Horsham - again a game where you would expect a large attendance.
Doesn’t seem quite fair on the leagues part when putting the fixtures together.
