What fun it was to be back, even if with our ancient limbs confined in small spaces between the new rows of padded seats. (Did Wembley ticket holders really put up with this discomfort?) And how good it was to start the season with three points.
The match itself was harum scarum,as perhaps we might have expected on a first outing - a great deal of muscularity and not a great deal of finesse. But we matched the visitors for vigorous tenacity, and although Cray hit the bar in the first twenty minutes and showed some threatening pace going forward it was the Rooks who took the lead on 30 minutes when Chris Whelpdale finished off a neat move from close in.
Chris who? Yes, it was a getting-to-know you afternoon, as captain Alfie Egan and Ryan Gondoh were our only familiar starters from last season. Here's the team we fielded: Nathan Harvey (we did have a keeper after all!), Jake Elliot, Harvey Hughes, Ronnie Vint, Arthur Penney, Alfie Egan, Kieran Murtagh, Tommy Wood, Ryan Gondoh, Chris Whelpdale, Kalvin Lombombo-Kalala. Archie Tamplin came on for Gondoh on 75 minutes, while William Salmon had a few seconds on the pitch for Murtagh before the final whistle blew.
Penney was MoM, the crowd was 606 and a good time was had by all - except for a few Cray fans who made it aggressively clear at the end that they've never forgiven Tony Russell for leaving them. Tony calmly confronted them before heading off for the dressing room,no doubt feeling that he had made the right decision.

I thought the whole team as a man were excellent. I especially liked Hughes, whelpdale , Penney. Couple of players vint and the 8(bare with me)need a bit of fitness but still put in shifts. For a 90% outfield new team they seemed too have decent cohesion. Onwards and upwards

Of course you're right, Captain! Incidentally, when I first entered Ronnie's name he was autocorrected to Vintage. Appropriate: let's hope he turns out to be another Tom Champion for us.

Well what a surprise “ before the game I was thinking along with a lot of others that we would see Lewes struggling to get going with a completely new team bar one,but how wrong the team looked as though they had been playing together for a few months rather than a few weeks. So if they can play like today and with more improvement we could be looking at a decent side as Tony Russell promised with the players he has signed. Away from the game the new seats are a big problem with so little leg room especially at the back a lot of annoyed people surly a little bit more thought could have gone into the planning for them with so much space at the front to have worked with.

I enjoyed the game, as fid the lady wife; it was good to be back and the seats didn't bother us at all, as we stood as usual.
Very impressed with Harvey in goal and although it looked as if a bit more match fitness was required, the team as a whole made a good impression. I thought they looked more like a team than last season, when we were often steady but relying on one or two stars to spread some magic.
Early days, though, let's look forward to the ride!

Sit at the back and get economy. Sit further forward and pay extra for a comfortable seat that is the plan 👍

Our old seats were tired and would have needed replacing very soon at a significant cost. The opportunity to get the seats from Wembley free of charge was too good an opportunity to miss. Yes, they are slightly wider but they also offer more comfort.

For a team of strangers that was a mighty impressive result. Must admit I feared the worst after a pre season that can only be described as challenging. Penney was superb at the back and Egan ran his socks off in midfield. Clearly some fitness issues and a few were treading water at the end but couldn't really ask for any more against a team that finished above us last season. Good to see that concentration levels remained high as we tended to switch off at times last season. Definitely workmanlike but hopefully we will see some more expansive play as the team gels. I did think Hughes looked a bit shaky at times but hopefully the barnstorming run towards the end is a sign of things to come once he hits his stride. I did keep a close eye on Wood, who got better as the game went on and certainly put in a shift. Too early to say if he has goals in him. The new keeper didn't have much to do, apart from one smart save, but looked comfortable with the ball at his feet. He did look a bit bemused by being asked to lead the after match celebration!

Stuart I’m not saying that the old seats didn’t need replacing and yes it was great you could get the new seats for nothing,it’s just the way they have been fitted surly when being replaced couldn’t they have moved the front rows further forward and so on as you whent upwards to make the back row not so tight.

Genuinely can’t comment on this - minds and hands greater than mine have worked tirelessly over the summer on this and have worked to a plan on installation. But I will feedback your comments

Im my opinion there would be another problem if the seats were all moved forward a bit. There would be a gap behind every seat that could be considered dangerous when walking along a row. It's not ideal but it is what it is.

The seats fit where the seats fit and no row has lost more than a couple of inches. It is the layout of the concrete steps that cannot be altered. The project team have done the best job possible with the challenges we faced. It has saved the club in the region of £50,000 through taking advantage of this opportunity, working with the current stand layout and with the fixings coming from Wembley. Enjoy your pint glass holders!

It seems I'm in the minority, but I thought the seats were great. I think some supporters must have legs like giraffes to complain. Comfy and the right colour! The numbering was amusing - to my right I had 42 and 17. Mine was blank and then 29 on my left! Did anyone notice now can get fruit pie and ice cream halftime? I doubt there's any other stadium in the world that's possible. What fun!
Nothing new to add to the match itself that hasn't already been said. I thought we looked pretty good. as for the journey home. Well, we'd best not talk about that. Oh go on then. Trespassers is on the line meant that trains in and out of Brighton were either delayed or cancelled. I had to wait 2 and 1/2 hours for a train back which of course meant that I missed my last bus from Basildon to home (by 3 minutes!!). It's only a four mile walk... in the dark... It could only happen to me! Got home shortly before one in the morning. On top of that, the train from Brighton was packed with Luton supporters. It really was a shoehorn people into the train job. It was like one of those Japanese commuter trains you sometimes see on TV!
