Because Spur, instead of there now being a smaller chain running things, there could potentially be a larger multi-national one if an agreement can't be sought with the current setup (this of course is only a guess. I don't know who the other bidders are. I'm merely speculating and could be wildly wrong.). People on the picket lines might have shot themselves in the foot on this one. My question, Sonna, was why you would laugh at that when you'd just said that it would be better for everyone if the Runaway stayed. I think I'm just expecting logic where there is none!

The point I was trying to make was that of course it would be nice if it stayed not for the benefit for the patrons (the 5000-odd that signed the petition and use the cafe daily), but for those who run it and work there. I don't like to see people out of work, but sometimes it unfortunately happens.
I would have laughed if, after everyones efforts (FCB called them 'intimidating'), the lease was awarded to an even larger chain. I don't laugh at the misfortunes of others i.e the Runaway.

Well, after all of that, it seems that Southern are now in negotiations with the existing Runaway owners.

Never been in there; couldn't really care less, tbh. But I did hear someone in the pub saying that they don't even have a proper coffee machine in there, which would be quite extraordinary in this day and age where people seem incapable of walking 100 yards without clutching a paper cup of brown liquid that's destined to become yet more litter for our streets. I would personally ban all fast food and drink (bar water) from every train in the land - smelly, dirty and disgusting. I had the misfortune to catch the 22.47 from London to Lewes a few weeks before Christmas, which was awash with people in all states of sobriety pouring and smearing revolting foodstuffs and drinks over every available surface. Including my sleeve.

Sorry about your sleeve, though . . .

Blackadder:Â Yes, well...[she slaps him twice] Lady Whiteadder:Â Wicked Child! Chairs are the work of Belezabub! At our house Nathaneal sits on a spike! Blackadder:Â And yourself? Lady Whiteadder:Â I sit on Nathaneal! Two spikes would be an extravagance.
